Tour 1 detailsThe Zaanse Schans is a precious reminder of past times. Strolling around this quaint neighbourhood you will find yourself back in the 17th century. It includes typical green houses and a number of windmills. Once, over 600 windmills dominated the silhouette of the Zaan District, the oldest industrial region in Europe. Today only twelve windmills remain. They were used in the past for grinding flour, mustard, paint and oil. The oil windmill will be visited. Subsequent a visit to the medieval town of Edam, which was a prosperous trading port in the 16th century and is nowadays world famous for its round cheeses, will follow.
